A HISTORY OF LES MILLS
Les Mills Workouts are the brainchild of Phillip Mills. He chose the moniker to honor his father, Les Mills. Les competed in four Olympics and launched a popular gym chain in New Zealand.
In a nutshell, Les Mills Workouts are best described as group fitness classes that make use of choreography and music. The origins of this program stem all the way back to the late 1980s when Phillip Mills developed the foundations of what eventually became his music-based exercise routines.
This exercise program first launched in the early 1990s as “BodyStep” throughout Les’s chain of New Zealand gyms. An international program known as “BodyPump” soon followed.
Les Mills workouts were well received in New Zealand and they quickly spread to Australia and eventually made their way to the United States and beyond. Les Mills International was founded in 1997 in an effort to expand the reach of the workout program across the globe.
Nowadays, Les Mills workouts are offered in thousands of gyms across 75 nations. These workouts are comprised of 14 unique programs. All but four of these programs qualify as “Group Fitness” in nature. One of the programs is geared toward youngsters while four are dubbed High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).
WHY ARE LES MILLS PROGRAMS SO POPULAR?
The aim of these exercise programs is to improve the fitness of everyone on planet Earth. Les Mills fans are adamant that they do not feel coerced into exercising. Rather, they credit Les Mills routines with amplifying their passion for exercise. Les Mills workout participants are quick to say just how much they love their fitness routine. These are the types of workouts you will look forward to rather than dread.
Aside from the above referenced BodyPump, Les Mills workouts include BodyCombat, BodyBalance, BodyAttack, BodyFlow, BodyStep, Les Mills Sprint, Les Mills Grit and many more.
As an example, Les Mills BodyCombat is a fast-paced, non-contact workout routine with martial arts elements. Follow the instructor’s lead as you kick and punch your way to the slim physique you have always desired. If you are looking for something with a slower pace, consider Les Mills BodyFlow. This is a yoga-based class that will boost your body, mind and general well-being. It works your entire body, rendering you balanced and calm.
