Sometimes the hardest part of getting — and staying — fit aren’t the workouts, but the battle with yourself to stay motivated and on track.

You can go strong for several weeks or months and then start skipping workouts.

Sticking with your exercise routine means being accountable to yourself, and even others. Having a variety of techniques and motivators to help you keeping going, like those listed here, becomes crucial.

Here are seven secrets to help to stay on track.

7 TIPS FOR STAYING MOTIVATED

1. WORK OUT WITH A FRIEND

It’s no secret that having a friend to work out with makes you more likely to stick with your fitness plan. You become accountable to another person (and they become accountable to you) and you keep each other motivated. Numerous studies have also shown that simply spending time with friends is an awesome stress reliever.

2. SHARE YOUR PROGRESS

Sharing your workout plan on social media before it happens can be a strong motivator to help you stick with it.

For example, you could post something in the evening about the run or workout you have planned for the next morning. Your friends will support you by wishing you luck or by sending motivational messages.

3. HIRE A PERSONAL TRAINER

The benefits of hiring a personal trainer are many: he or she will help you keep your workout fresh, they’ll show you proper exercise techniques that will help prevent injury, and they’ll push you when you’re “not feeling it.” Furthermore, never be afraid to ask a trainer for advice or how to do exercises that are intimidating — that’s what they’re there for.

4. KEEP A WORKOUT JOURNAL/LOG

A smart way to keep yourself motivated is by keeping a workout log in which you record each workout, how you felt, etc. You can also use it to write down motivational mantras that inspire you, or use it in a calendar format and mark those days when you don’t workout with a big red ‘X.’

5. GET YOUR FAMILY INVOLVED

There are so many reasons why you should make exercise something the entire family can enjoy together. As a parent, you’re helping to set a good example for your kids. Activities like swimming or bike riding are healthy, fun ways to do things together. Exercising together will also help you create memories that will last you a lifetime.

6. SIGN UP FOR A COMPETITION

By signing up for an event like a 5K run or CrossFit competition will give you a definite goal to shoot for while helping you stick with your fitness plan.

7. GET UP AND MOVING

Set your alarm for an hour earlier three times a week and use that extra time to exercise. It’s often difficult to exercise after work when you may be mentally or physically exhausted.
