Hot And Cold: How To Transition Your Workouts From Summer To Fall

The summer will conclude in a few weeks and this is the time to start thinking about how to make a graceful transition from your summer exercise routine to a fall fitness regimen.

CONSIDER ALTERING YOUR WORKOUT SCHEDULE

This brutally hot summer has been rough, but it didn’t keep everyone from taking their workouts outside. The fall season will change drastically.

You’ll be able to go outside whenever you desire thanks to the mild temperatures. You can mix in an afternoon lunch workout instead of waking up at at sunrise to go for your daily run.

BRING AN EXTRA LAYER OF CLOTHING

Fall temperatures can dip quite low, especially early in the morning and late at night. Don’t let the enjoyable fall temperatures convince you that any summer workout gear will suffice. Bring along an extra layer just in case it is cooler than expected. You can always remove the layer and stash it in your car or gym bag.

SOAK UP VITAMIN D

The summer sun is painfully powerful. Many of us try to stay out of direct sunlight in the dog days of summer. Use the cool fall temperatures as an opportunity to soak up some much-needed vitamin D from the sun. But continue to wear sunscreen!

TAKE PRECAUTIONS WHEN EXERCISING

Fall’s lovely weather gives you the opportunity to exercise at dawn, dusk or any time in between. If you decide to mix in an outdoor run at an early or late hour, take precautions. Wear bright colored, reflective clothing so motorists and bicyclists can see you.

SWITCH UP YOUR WORKOUT

If you perform the same exercises over and over, your body will inevitably plateau. Get the most out of your workouts by switching up activities and intensity levels. This way, you’ll keep your body guessing. The change in seasons represents the perfect opportunity to incorporate some new twists to your exercise regimen. Try a new machine, give interval training a chance, sign up for a group fitness class or participate in a personal training session.

HEAD INDOORS WHEN THE FALL TEMPERATURES DIP

Though fall weather is usually quite pleasant, some days are a little bit too cool. You never know what the weather is going to be like in the Texas Panhandle!

Don’t exercise when it is so cold that your teeth are chattering. Instead, head indoors for a workout session at the Amarillo Town Club.
