Whether it’s yoga or Zumba, starting a new fitness class can be intimidating — especially if it’s a form of exercise you’ve never done before. On the other hand, joining a gym and participating in a group class is a fun, effective way to get a jumpstart on your New Year’s resolutions.

SURVIVING A NEW FITNESS CLASS

So how do you overcome your hesitations about fitness classes to experience the benefits they provide? Here are five tips for putting aside your fears and taking the plunge.

1. BRING A FRIEND

Trying something new is always easier with a supportive companion. Taking a friend with you to a new fitness class not only makes the experience more pleasant but it also holds you accountable. You’re less likely to skip the class if someone’s expecting to meet you there.

Additionally, many gyms and fitness centers offer guests passes for friends.

2. ASK FOR MODIFICATIONS

Maybe you’re hesitant to join a fitness class because you’re afraid of embarrassing yourself by not being able to perform the moves. Keep in mind that everyone was new once, and you’ll never excel at an exercise program unless you try it.

Often, class instructors provide beginner-level versions of the moves they teach. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for a modification when the exercise is too difficult.

3. SHOW UP EARLY

One of the best ways to feel prepared and ready to conquer a new fitness class is to get there early. This allows you to find a good spot in the front where you can easily see the instructor. You’ll also have time to familiarize yourself with any equipment that may be used.

4. FOCUS ON FORM

Practicing good form is crucial. If you fail to do a move with the correct posture, you may not see the results you desire from that exercise. Even worse, you could end up injured.

The best way to make sure your form is on point? Get it correct from the start. Take the extra time to perfect your posture, ask the instructor to check you’re correctly performing each move, and slow down if necessary.

5. KEEP MOVING

The worst thing you can do during a fitness class is give up. No matter how challenging the exercise, keep trying. Try to maintain good form. However, if you can’t, just keep your body moving.

Group fitness classes are all about progressing. With every class you attend, you will become stronger and healthier.
